We are kicking off our 2019 Femme Features with one of our GirlTribe Ambassadors, Martina Biljan! Martina is originally from London, Ontario but has lived all over the world teaching yoga. (Ya, we’re jealous too!). She found yoga over 13 years ago and started teaching 8 years ago. Martina is also a registered holistic nutritionist, meditation coach, a Corporate Wellness Consultant and founder of Martina Biljan Wellness and Lifestyle Mentoring.

We asked Martina to let us peek into her world, and here’s what she had to say.
How did you get started in Yoga and Nutrition?
To be completely candid, I got into yoga because I wanted a pair of lululemon yoga pants. The yoga studio was the only place in London, Ontario selling them, and you got a free yoga class pass when you purchased them. I was a dancer at the time, so I scoffed at the thought of going to a yoga class where I was sure to be a master with all my flexibility (insert eyeroll here). Let's just say I came out more of a humbled being. That humbling experience was what got me through many dark times to come in my 20's. Anything shitty that happened, I knew where I would need to go to get out of my funk, cry my eyes out onto the mat, or use my breath to calm the anxiety creeping in.
The nutrition came from a healthier seed. My private yoga clients would often ask what smoothies I was drinking, what they recommended for pre-natal nutrition, and more. So, I thought I would dive in and educate myself. I couldn't think of a better pairing than nutrition and movement medicine, so I went to the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition, and became a Registered Holistic Nutritionist.
I wanted others to learn how to have it all in their life and body. I have gone from zero to hero – with food, exercise, spirituality, love, appearance, work, and I’m sure there are more I am forgetting. I used to be an all-or-nothing, type-A, extremist. I would practice ALL the yoga, eat only organic food, dress like a hippy, meditate, and then judge myself for not doing enough of it all. Then, when I had had enough of that, I swung completely the other direction on the pendulum and crashed. I crashed HARD. Maybe you can relate to what happened next... I would drink all the wine, eat pizza until I hated myself, binge watch shitty TV, drive past the gym, and avoid contact with any human that was bettering themselves. And, you guessed it, judge the shit out of myself for not being perfect. I was doing things for the sake of doing things, because I thought I was supposed to.
It wasn’t until I surrounded myself with a loving community that I realized, I didn’t have to be perfect. Yoga teachers can have a glass of wine. Nutritionists can sometimes eat ice-cream. Meditaters can watch Netflix. I didn’t have to be the perfect version of any of the avatars I was trying so hard to be, and I could actually enjoy myself.
That’s why I use yoga, nutrition, meditation, and mentorship, to help people create a lifestyle that makes me feel balanced, empowered, connected and free.
What is your favourite manifestation technique? What magic have you manifested with it??
Honestly, this year was the year I started journaling big time. The ladies of GirlTribe introduced me to it, and although I thought it was kind of bs when I started, man has it been huge! I have manifested a following on social that I never thought possible. I manifested a motivational work ethic that I never thought possible. By journaling and "I am" statements, I have launched and implemented so many things last year - online programs, social media challenges, and the confidence to do it all. I really never had that before.
Another one is just trusting. Trust is a must. I remember I always wanted to live by water and in a condo. I kept visualizing living in a condo that overlooked a lake. It kept popping up for me that way. Then, I put that visualization away for a couple months, and then one day when we were moving into a condo complex that overlooks a pond, I realized I got it. It may not have been exactly the water I was visualizing, but I got everything I asked for. Trust. Trust that the universe has got your back!
How do you like to start and end your day? Any go-to rituals?
I love to start my day with water, meditation, and a journaling gratitude practice. I'll be honest, it doesn't always happen everyday! But, those are the ways I love to start my day.
I love ending my day with a warm shower. I'm kind of weird in needing to go to bed clean. I feel like going to bed is the perfect sacred space to manifest dreams, visualize, meditate. So, I love creating a clean clear environment for myself to do all of those things.
What is your favourite yoga pose?
I LOVE pigeon. Most people hate it, but I love the challenge, as well as the opening I get from my hips. It's a big one for me.
