How to take your schedule back - yes, it is possible.

Posted by Robyn Savage on

This goes for you, girl with the busiest schedule of all. The mama who can't find time to pee. The entrepreneur who has 46 meetings scheduled next week. The woman travelling the globe with no time to start her dream business...

Yes, this blog post is for you.

Schedules are a choice. All schedules, every day, we each have a choice. I know this is going to come across as a hard truth, but I'm going to give you practical ways to get your eye on the prize and put everything that's NOT important way outta site so you can stop getting distracted by the things that don't matter (as much) in this season of life.

First things first...

1. There is a season for everything.

Realize, right now, that whatever you're prioritizing this week, this month, this quarter, this year...doesn't have to be the same thing you prioritize tomorrow, or the next day...or even the next day! There is a season of life for EVERYTHING. A season for training, a season for momming, a season for growing, a season for hustling, a season for resting, a season for travelling, a season for nesting...there's a season for literally, EVERYTHING. And you are allowed to choose when those seasons change.

Choose what season you're in right now, and really CHOOSE IT.

2. Stop trying to do everything at once and getting nothing done.

By choosing your season, you can start saying YES to opportunities, events, people, and tasks that directly relate to your season...and saying NO THANK YOU to everything else. The beautiful thing about this? You don't have to feel guilty about saying NO to the girls weekend, or scheduling a weekend work meeting, or spending the morning in bed with your baby (again)....because guess what? This is your season. This is your time for _____________, and that's what you're making time for. That's what your focus is on. That's your goal. And that's how you make sure your schedule is filled with things that fulfill you in this moment.

When my second daughter was born, I deliberately didn't open my computer for 7 weeks. Not to write, not to take a peek at my booking software, not to view my team's schedule...not to do anything. I set a hard boundary to keep my laptop closed, because I knew the moment I opened it, I'd be in-deliberately returning back to a season of "work" and I wasn't ready (or wanting) to.

What are some tasks on your plate that could be saved for a different season?

3. Be unrealistically, realistic.

Okay, let's get real. Of course you can't just decide to turn off motherhood because it's not "in season". Life doesn't work like that. But not signing yourself up for the field trip or saying yes to join the PTA is not an obligation of motherhood. Ya feel me? Sure, you have to feed your kids and no one else is going to tuck them in at night...but you don't have to DO IT ALL. You can still be an A+ mama and not hold yourself accountable for doing it all yourself. When you take yourself off the hook and discover your children still love you just the same when you're out in the world pursuing dreams of your own...that's when you will discover you have freedom within motherhood to do other things that light you up and bring you happiness. Your kids are amazing. But so are your dreams. Make time for them.

Same goes for work. Saying YES to the new project because you feel obligated, or applying for the promotion to prove you're capable, or not turning your phone off to receive work emails at night...these things are NOT serving you if you're not in a season of hustling. If you're not in a "career" season of life (growth, development, learning)...then working around the clock because you feel like you "should", is a sure fire way to burn yourself the fuck out. It's inevitable that you will burn out if you're not creating from a place of inspiration and working from a place of ease.

This is as certain as the cycle of life. I promise. I've done it (a couple times). It's not where you want to be.

What are certain tasks from each season of life are mandatory for you to perform? What tasks could be outsourced? Who could you ask for help? What's the worst that would happen if you said no?

When you start to apply yourself (and your time) to the season of life you're in - and doing just enough in the other areas - you will feel free.

4. Writing your new schedule.

Now that you know what season of life you're in, you can start to curate your schedule based on things that will directly serve you at this time.

I'm going to share some examples to show you what this might look like, because I know for a lot of us, this is a very new concept and can be hard to chew in bite sized pieces! Get ready for to take your schedule back. Get ready to accomplish things and feel fucking good about it. Get ready to remove the guilt.

Here we go!

SEASON: WORK

> "I'm in a season of work and growing my business, which means making investments and spending my free time in hustle mode."

- I say no to parties in order to save money and wake up feeling motivated, rather than broke and tired.
- I say yes to a coaching program that's going to help me streamline my process and bring me clarity and strategy early on.

- I say no to starting a new relationship because I know how deeply my romantic life effects my ability to focus on my goals, and I'm worthy of investing in my own dreams and purpose. (Disclaimer: of course you can do both - this is just an example for people who can relate! Don't get feisty.)
- I say yes to networking, building relationships with mentors, and surrounding myself with people in the industry who can teach me through experience and introduce me to new opportunities.

MANTRA: "I AM BUILDING A BUSINESS THAT MATTERS. I FEEL NO GUILT OR SHAME FOR INVESTING IN MY FUTURE AND FULFILLMENT, FOR THIS SERVES MYSELF AS WELL AS OTHERS, AND THE WORLD NEEDS MY GIFT."

SEASON: MOTHERHOOD

> "I have two young kids and I want to be giving them my everything until they're at school age. I am in a season of motherhood."

- I say no to hustle mode, understanding that my business idea will still exist and belong to me in two years when I'm ready to go for it!
- I say yes to middle-of-the-day cuddle puddles, pyjama days, spending money on family vacays, and investing my time in raising my children with pride.

- I say no to girls weekends, opt out of business trips, and decline or postpone other events and activities that will take me away from the priority of spending time with my kids.
- I say yes to going down to part-time hours, I say yes to creating new family traditions, I say yes to bringing my family with me on the mandatory business trip.

MANTRA: "I AM A MOTHER FIRST IN THIS SEASON OF MY LIFE, AND I PRIDE MYSELF ON BEING AVAILABLE FOR, AND PRESENT WITH MY CHILDREN. I UNDERSTAND THERE IS A SEASON FOR EVERYTHING, AND MY DREAMS WILL WAIT UNTIL I AM READY TO PURSUE THEM."

SEASON: REST

> "I am in a season of rest. After years of not letting myself take a break or slow down, I am finally finding peace in a more simple way of living to restore my full being."

- I say no to exhausting myself in ways that do not serve me, such as partying, upholding a busy travel schedule, taking on additional projects at work, or building new communities.
- I say yes to connecting with myself and investing in self care. I say yes to spending time with friends and family who make me feel safe and supported.

- I say no to heavy foods, an abundance of alcohol, and other toxic substances and patterns that leave me feeling depleted.
- I say yes to establishing new patterns that result in rest, new energy, glowing skin, flow, ease, and patience.

MANTRA: "I AM IN A SEASON OF WELL DESERVED REST. I WILL NOT FEEL GUILTY FOR PRIORITIZING MY BODY'S REJUVENATION AND WELL BEING. I AM WORTHY OF THE TIME AND MONEY SPENT ON MYSELF TO RESTORE ALL THAT I AM BACK TO FULLNESS."

The Overall Effect...

When you realize you have control of the seasons of your life and you can choose where to spend your time and energy...your schedule becomes yours again. Not your bosses. Not your kids. Not your husbands. Not even your parents, best friends, or dogs. Nope. You.

You own your time when you choose where it goes.

Time is like a currency - where will you choose to spend it?

Take yourself through these journal exercises to further establish what season of life you're currently in and start implementing these tools to take your schedule back! You can thank me later ;)
